RCC Palo Alto Pescadero

RCC Palo Alto Pescadero

Bring your climbing legs! This one is a doozy! In the interest of getting others from outside the City involved with RCC activities, let's incorporate the Caltrain schedule to make things easy. On weekends, Caltrain now runs every 30 minutes and is a much better, smoother ride than before, since all the trains are now electrified. Same "tag on" and "tag off" rules apply with your Clipper card. Weekend schedule is here: https://www.caltrain.com/media/33908 If coming from 4th and King in SF, there's a train that leaves at 7:55am and makes all stops along the way down south, getting you in to Palo Alto at 8:45am. I'll likely be on this train, but hopping on in San Mateo. Coming from the south, you have a few additional options that start even earlier, but there are two trains that get in at 8:25am and 8:55am that should coincide with those coming from the north. This ride will take us up and over the ridge into Pescadero, a small town with a quirky coffee shop and Arcangeli market, known for its freshly baked garlic-artichoke bread and even some sandwiches in the back. It's worth it, I promise. There should be plenty of us around that day, but you may want to bring a small lock if you need to leave the bike outside and wait for a sandwich (it can get a bit busy on the weekends). There are effectively 4 climbs to this ride: - Page Mill Road, the longest climb of the day, a little over 6 miles and about 2k feet of climbing - Pescadero Creek Road, one of my favorite climbs of the Bay Area, but relatively tame by comparison - Stage Road, a meandering up and down south to north road that keeps you off highway 1 as we head north after filling up on delicious bread (it includes a couple climbs, generally) - Tunitas Creek Road, an iconic climb that will definitely test you after all the previous climbing! Not as intense as Page Mill, but quiet and a Bay Area staple for road cycling. Besides the climbs, there are some glorious descents to be had through redwood forests, quiet roads, and scenic views. Alpine Road towards the bottom is quite a sight to behold, following a beautiful stream that takes you in a quiet gulley. If anyone has questions or comments on any of this, feel free to ping me here and I'll be happy to help! See you all there!

Old La Honda is one of the premier climbs of the peninsula, about a 3.3 mile climb up ~1300 feet. It's a great training climb through redwoods and trees, and is made particularly special since you can get there via Cañada road following the beautiful Upper and Lower Crystal Springs reservoirs. On Sundays the road is typically closed to cars for a good portion of it, making the ride down towards Filioli (a fancy winery) calm and quiet. Let's meet at Fiero Caffe, an Italian-run coffee shop at 9am and head northward towards the Millbrae BART / Caltrain station. This way, those of us who wish to drive can simply drive to Fiero and park (plenty of street parking nearby on Sundays), while others can choose to take BART or Caltrain to the Millbrae or San Mateo stations. With the electrification of the train, Caltrain now runs every 30 minutes on weekends, so you can leave SF at 7:55, 8:25, 8:55, etc and get to Millbrae as quickly as 8:16, 8:46, 9:16, etc. If taking BART, your schedule may vary, but to get to Millbrae, remember you typically go past the SFO stop first. You could even ride over from the San Bruno station if you want, and I can provide you some options there if you'd like. If taking Caltrain, you can actually go directly to the station in San Mateo, which will get you in at 8:24, 8:54, 9:24 etc. If we leave Fiero between 9 and 9:30, we'll get to Millbrae within 20-30 minutes. After descending one of my favorite descents in the Bay Area, we can stop in at the Village Hub, a small coffee shop run out of a local church that had plenty of bike parking to enjoy a latte or even an espresso tonic. From there, we'll head back the way we came to San Mateo, finishing for lunch at Fiero, where they have some amazing pasta and more recently pizza. Bring road bikes and foot retention please, and be prepared with layers, as things tend to be chilly at the top of Skyline. Rain will likely cancel this ride. Let me know any questions you have, feel free to message me directly on Strava or find me on Instagram via my @bicyclewatercooler account. See you there!

Twist on a Classic

Anyone interested in a 70-ish mile classic Tunitas loop ride starting from Millbrae BART station? I live in San Mateo, so I do this loop often, but we can totally start from the Millbrae BART station to make life easier for those coming in from the city. Initial plan is to climb up Millbrae Ave, a beautiful tree lined neighborhood climb that takes you up to where the Sawyer Camp trail comes out (the top portion is currently closed). From there we can take the super secret way to Pacifica past the penitentiary before heading south to Half Moon Bay. Once in town, we can either grab coffee somewhere (Dawn Patrol or Mezza Luna in Princeton are good options too) or possibly a "hamburger sandwich" from Dad's Luncheonette, a limited menu spot serving burgers out of an old train caboose made by a former Michelin starred chef (or so I'm told). Next up we can take some detours through Higgins Canyon Road and Lobitos Creek, both of which showcase some amazing coastal climbing. If we're not feeling it, we can continue south to Tunitas Creek, heading back past the Bike Hut (something we'll skip if doing Lobitos Creek). Either way, Tunitas Creek is a long, but beautiful, quiet, redwood tree lined climb back up over the peninsula, taking us back to Kings Mountain Road and Cañada road to head back up the peninsula to Millbrae. I'll make sure to take us through a few small sections of Hillsborough, a favorite spot of mine on the way. And if you haven't had your burger fix yet, there's an In n Out just across from the Bart station!

Quick update - make sure to update your device's route if you previously sync'd it, as I've slightly updated the route to avoid Skyline. Taking Skyline back can still be done, as it's fast, fun, and about 5 miles shorter in total, but can be a bit unnerving if there's wind or a lot of weekend traffic. I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me about doing this particular route, so let’s do it! You may need to update the route though, as the west side of OLH is currently closed due to construction (I had to scramble over construction equipment last time), so we may just backtrack a bit towards Alice’s and head down the west side of 84, which is a fun, fast descent. The ride out to Pescadero is one of my favorites in all of the Bay Area. You go along quiet roads through tall redwood trees, and will enjoy cool weather and fantastic, fast descents with open vistas. It’s a big day, but it’s worth it. Lunch options include either a stop in the town of Pescadero or a bit before it in the tiny “town” of Loma Mar, where there’s an amazing little kitchen and general store that has great food. They definitely don’t mind the cycling crowd, and I talked to the owner a bit this past weekend. They have fantastic (healthy) food and coffee options. Alternatively in town, there are several options including a coffee shop, a fantastic (cash-only) Mexican spot (in a gas station no doubt), and Arcangeli’s Grocery, which has amazing sandwiches in the back and is known for their garlic artichoke bread (IYKYK, it’s amazing). If it’s a hot day, the coffee shop also currently sells soft serve, with an optional topping of olive oil and Hawaiian red salt. Don’t knock it before you try it, because it’s fantastic. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out! See you Saturday! Route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3182224065692383050
